It\u2019s a great way to not only learn how an ESOP works, but to also recognize and celebrate the benefits that come with being an employee-owned company. <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the reasons we\u2019re excited to celebrate Employee Ownership Month is because LGC has an <a href=\"https:\/\/lgcassociates.com\/es\/lgc-announces-esop-ahead-of-20th\/\">Employee Stock Ownership Plan<\/a> (ESOP). This went into effect in 2022, with LGC employees effectively owning 30% of the business.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Here\u2019s How an ESOP Works in Honor of Employee Ownership Month<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now on to what you really want to know: how an ESOP works. Part of its definition is in its name \u2013 employee stock ownership. Workers receive shares of stock as part of this benefit plan, whether the company is publicly traded or privately owned. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How an ESOP works is that it\u2019s effectively a trust fund and &#8220;can be funded by companies putting newly issued shares into them, putting cash in to buy existing company shares, or borrowing money through the entity to buy company shares.\u201d (via <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/e\/esop.asp\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Investopedia<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To see the financial benefits of an ESOP, (in most cases) the employee must do two things. One of them is vesting their shares. Vesting is the process which gradually earns employees their full ownership through certain conditions \u2013 often related to the length of time you\u2019ve worked\/will continue to work at the company. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That doesn\u2019t mean money will appear in your account once your shares are vested. Typically cashing out from your ESOP involves terminating employment, retiring, dying, or becoming disabled and unable to work; but this is all dependent on the details of the plan which you can find in the guidelines. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now that you know how an ESOP works, consider implementing this benefit plan at your organization.
