Every week we comb through the news to find employment trends affecting the hospitality\u00a0<\/span>industry<\/span> so you don\u2019t have to. This week\u2019s topic: what to do when an employee is a no call no show. <\/span><\/p>\n

No Call No Show<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Anyone who has worked in the hospitality industry is familiar with a no call no show<\/span>\u00a0(NCNS)<\/span>. For those that are new to the term, it\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>typically\u00a0<\/span>used to\u00a0<\/span>describe an<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>employee who\u00a0<\/span>d<\/span>oes no<\/span>t<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>show up\u00a0<\/span>to work<\/span>\u00a0and did not notify their employer<\/span>\u00a0of their\u00a0<\/span>impending\u00a0<\/span>absence<\/span>. Although every single manager has\u00a0<\/span>some sort of experience\u00a0<\/span>w<\/span>ith a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>NCNS, there are little statistics\u00a0<\/span>documenting<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>how often it happens, making them hard to plan for.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When\u00a0<\/span>workers\u00a0<\/span>fail to show up to their shift, managers are left<\/span>\u00a0tracking down the employee<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>while\u00a0<\/span>trying to find alternate coverage<\/span>. Usually customers\u00a0<\/span>are the ones to\u00a0<\/span>receive a brunt of the damage<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>if\u00a0<\/span>service\u00a0<\/span>suffers, leading to issues such as extended wait times, longer ticket times, and\u00a0<\/span>spread-thin employees.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, no call no shows are\u00a0<\/span>becoming increasingly common during the interview process as well.\u00a0<\/span>Some businesses have turned to scheduling more candidates during allotted interview times\u00a0<\/span>to account for those who won\u2019t show up.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are a variety of occurrences where a NCNS can happen, but the reasons behind doing it\u00a0<\/span>are usually similar;\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>disregard for employment,\u00a0<\/span>the worker<\/span>\u00a0ha<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0another job,\u00a0<\/span>there are\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>lack of\u00a0<\/span>communication\u00a0<\/span>options, or an emergency came up. Besides the latter, no call no shows can<\/span>\u00a0often<\/span>\u00a0be avoided.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are a few ways to help avoid employees<\/span>\u00a0from<\/span>\u00a0committing a NCNS;\u00a0<\/span>o<\/span>ne of those is by having a clear line of communication where workers can contact management. Depending on the\u00a0<\/span>business, it\u2019s not always easy to get a manager on the phone. By having a dedicated phone number or email that is frequently checked<\/span>, employees will know they can always reach someone if need be.\u00a0<\/span>This is especially important for candidates coming for an interview, in case they have questions about directions or parking.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another way to avoid NCNS\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>is by encouraging your team to call off a shift\u00a0<\/span>if\u00a0<\/span><\/b>absolutely necessary<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0This also works for interviews by allowing candidates to reschedule (although we suggest limiting the number of reschedules).\u00a0<\/span>Ideally<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0no one would ever call off a shift \u2013 but by showing\u00a0<\/span>your team that\u00a0<\/span>it<\/span>\u00a0IS an option<\/span>\u00a0if they\u2019re sick or have an emergency<\/span>, they\u2019ll feel\u00a0<\/span>like they have o<\/span>ther choices\u00a0<\/span>besides not showing up at all.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally,\u00a0<\/span>consider\u00a0<\/span>hav<\/span>ing\u00a0<\/span>an on-call team.\u00a0<\/span>While it differs from business to business, an on-call employee is typically expected to be available and arrive to work\u00a0<\/span>quickly<\/span>\u00a0if another worker does not\u00a0show up.\u00a0<\/span>By utilizing a staffing partner like LGC,\u00a0<\/span>clients can request temporary employees<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0short notice\u00a0<\/span>to either supply their on-call team or fill a last-minute vacancy.\u00a0<\/span>(Learn about LGC\u2019s flexible staffing solutions\u00a0<\/span>here<\/span><\/a>.)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
