Setting Clear Job Expectations<\/strong><\/h5>\n

H<\/span>iring managers know that\u00a0<\/span>creating<\/span>\u00a0a job description\u00a0<\/span>is one of the most important steps\u00a0<\/span>in recruitment<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>There are several things to consider when\u00a0<\/span>creating the advertisement<\/span>\u00a0such as length, content, and\u00a0<\/span>most of all, accuracy. By setting clear job expectations, you\u2019ll p<\/span>roperly prepare<\/span> new hires<\/span>, leading to higher employee retainment.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to a survey by\u00a0<\/span>Glassdoor<\/span><\/a>, 61% of employees reported that their new job \u2018is not what they expected<\/span>.\u2019 In a worst-case scenario, this confusion so early in employment can lead to turnover, which is<\/span>\u00a0currently<\/span>\u00a0over 70% in the restaurant in<\/span>dustry.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So how do I start setting clear job expectations? <\/span><\/i>By s<\/span>tarting with the job description,\u00a0<\/span>candidates should know immediately if they are a good fit for the position and if they have the skills required to complete it successfully.\u00a0<\/span>Here are some tips for putting together a description for an open position:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Be 100% honest and accurate<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0You should list all the re<\/span>sponsibilities\u00a0<\/span>and duties assigned to the job, wh<\/span>ether they\u2019re \u201cglamorous\u201d or not. For example, if the server you\u2019re hiring needs to assist in taking out the garbage every night, make sure that\u2019s mentioned in the description. No matter how sma<\/span>ll the task, if it\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>a requirement for the job, candidates should know ahead of time and be able to decide if\u00a0<\/span>it’s something they’re willing to do.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Ask someone currently working in the position you\u2019re hiring for to write it with you.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0If you\u2019ve been in management for a while<\/span>\u00a0or have never worked the position you\u2019re hiring for<\/span>, you may\u00a0<\/span>forget to include some of the lesser known responsibilities<\/span>. By asking an employee who is currently working in the position you\u2019re hiring for to help you write the advertisement, you can rest assured knowing nothing pertinent is missing from the description.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Hire for soft skills, not just technical skills.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>Soft skills may include being friendly,\u00a0<\/span>positive, or a great communicator \u2013 all characteristics that make a great hospitality employee.\u00a0<\/span>Soft skills are usually identified during the interview process and will help show you if the candidate is a good personality match for your open position. Remember, just because someone has the technical skills, doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re automatically a great fit for the job.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    By setting clear job expectations\u00a0<\/span>in the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>description, managers will attract candidates who are interested in the position and understand the requirements that come along with it.\u00a0<\/span>Being honest and transparent about the type of worker you need\u00a0<\/span>is key to a successful partnership between employee and employer.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
