2020 has been a year that\u2019s forced<\/span>\u00a0many of<\/span>\u00a0us to reflect and reevaluate\u00a0<\/span>what\u2019s important to us<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2013\u2013 and\u00a0<\/span>LGC was no exception<\/span>. In June, some of our team sat down to talk about our company’s shared goals and hopes for the future.\u00a0<\/span>The result? Crafting a mission and vision statement that better reflects our company.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u00a0<\/span><\/b>is a mission and vision statement?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

First, it\u2019s important to\u00a0<\/span>identify what a mission statement and vision statement are. <\/span>They can be\u00a0<\/span>defined<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>by the following<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>A vision statement focuses on tomorrow and what an organization wants to ultimately become. A mission statement focuses on today and what an organization does to achieve it. Both are vital in directing goals.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are a couple reasons\u00a0<\/span>why someone<\/span>\u00a0would create or update\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>mission and vision statement<\/span>; for example,\u00a0<\/span>you<\/span>r organization doesn\u2019t have one already,\u00a0<\/span>your\u00a0<\/span>company has changed directions recently, or you\u2019re reprioritizing\u00a0<\/span>the focus of your operations. Whatever the reason is, implementing a strong mission and vision statement is important for effectively communicating with your desired audience.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our roadmap to success<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When the \u201cMission Statement Taskforce\u201d at LGC was\u00a0<\/span>established<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>we took a detailed approach to\u00a0<\/span>crafting the statements that would\u00a0<\/span>eventually\u00a0<\/span>represent\u00a0<\/span>our company. The taskforce, formed by CEO George\u00a0<\/span>Lessmeister<\/span>, was comprised of diverse individuals who all\u00a0<\/span>brought a unique background to LGC. After first evaluating the current mission statement, we did research on statements we liked, and eventually landed on the idea to also\u00a0<\/span>build a vision statement to highlight what we see for the future.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Once each taskforce member wrote a first draft, we began sharing feedback and analyzing\u00a0<\/span>what we put together. One huge aspect of our process was to include feedback from other team members, so one week the taskforce consulted with\u00a0<\/span>colleagues on what they wanted in a mission and vision statement and what was important to them.\u00a0<\/span>After rounds of review and providing feedback,\u00a0<\/span>the taskforce chose a couple options to present to LGC\u2019s executive team. From there, a winner was chosen.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tips for crafting your own statements<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After we finalized our statements, we were able to identify some tips for others who are going through the process of creating their mission and vision statement. <\/span>These include:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
