This year we\u2019ve heard<\/span>\u00a0a lot about employees\u00a0<\/span>furloughed due to the coronavirus.\u00a0<\/span>Furloughed\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>defined as<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c…an unpaid leave of absence. While furloughed employees still technically retain their jobs, the furlough itself means that they cease working for their employers and do not earn a salary. The idea is that this is a temporary arrangement, and workers will one day be able to return to their jobs.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For\u00a0<\/span>many<\/span>, these furloughs have lasted 5 months<\/span>, with several states still not allowing employees back to work.\u00a0<\/span>Now that we\u2019re weeks into reopening, employees have been welcomed back, but some are\u00a0<\/span>finding it difficult to stay motivated<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>which can directly impact\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>success of your\u00a0<\/span>company<\/span>)<\/span>. Below, we outline 4 tips for engaging and motivating furloughed employees<\/span>\u00a0so they feel excited to get back to\u00a0<\/span>business<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>TIPS FOR MOTIVATING FURLOUGHED EMPLOYEES<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Be there for extra support<\/span><\/b>
\nDuring this time especially, everyone has their own struggles, whether professional, personal, or financial.\u00a0<\/span>As their manager,\u00a0<\/span>one priority should be\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>creat<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0an environment at work where employees feel comfortable and supported.<\/span>\u00a0To do so, it may involve providing extra support in terms of communicating, listening, and understanding.\u00a0<\/span>Being empathetic will show\u00a0<\/span>your team<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that you care about them as people, not just employee<\/span>s, making them more enthusiastic about returning to work.\u00a0<\/span>Consider\u00a0<\/span>opening<\/span> additional lines of communication or holding daily meetings to check in on each other \u2013 this is a great way to keep the line of communication open when motivating furloughed employees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Emphasize company values<\/span><\/b>
\nA great motivator is to remind your team why they\u00a0<\/span>enjoy working with your business in the first place. If you\u2019re a restaurant, maybe it\u2019s the ability to connect with a guest. If you\u2019re a hotel, maybe it\u2019s meeting new people. Whatever the case may be, reignit<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0those feelings they first had when they were hired<\/span>\u00a0c<\/span>ould be the boost they need.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Plan on meeting before the big return<\/span><\/b>
\nReturning to work can feel overwhelming, especially during a pandemic.\u00a0<\/span>Plan to hold a \u2018returning to work\u2019 meeting in order to share any relevant\u00a0<\/span>company\u00a0<\/span>updates<\/span>\u00a0and to give\u00a0<\/span>employees\u00a0<\/span>a chance to ask questions or share concerns about going back to work (if any). \nAs employees return to work, it\u2019s a good time to reevaluate their skills and how they\u00a0<\/span>can be utilized.\u00a0<\/span>This will n<\/span>ot only\u00a0<\/span>reduce the need to hire,\u00a0<\/span>it will also serve\u00a0as a way to\u00a0engage and retain employees<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0According to a 2018 report by\u00a0<\/span>LinkedIn<\/span><\/a>, 93% of employees would stay at their company longer if managers showed interest in developing their careers through upskilling.<\/span>\u00a0Added income because of a new skill is a great reason to be motivated.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Motivating furloughed employees is necessary for maintaining retention and supporting your workforce.
