Every week we comb through the news to find employment trends affecting the hospitality\u00a0<\/span>industry<\/span> so you don\u2019t have to. This week\u2019s topic: ghost kitchens and mobile ordering.<\/span><\/p>\n

Due to the continued prevalence of the coronavirus, t<\/span>he wants and needs of consumers have been changing<\/span>, w<\/span>ith \u201c<\/span>cleanliness<\/span><\/a>\u00a0[being] the new ambiance\u201d when it comes to\u00a0<\/span>guest’s<\/span>\u00a0intent-to-return<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>R<\/span>estaurants ranging from fast food to\u00a0<\/span>dine<\/span>\u00a0in serv<\/span>ice have been improving and altering their concepts in order to accommodate what guests want:\u00a0<\/span>the guarantee that<\/span>\u00a0health and safety measures<\/span> are being taken. And there are two ways businesses are prioritizing those wants \u2013 ghost kitchens and mobile ordering.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ghost Kitchens and Mobile Ordering<\/strong><\/h5>\n

T<\/span>hese\u00a0<\/span>operational\u00a0<\/span>adjustments have led to<\/span>\u00a0various new<\/span>\u00a0concepts<\/span>, one being<\/span>\u00a0ghost kitchens<\/span>. A ghost kitchen<\/span>, \u201c<\/span>also<\/span><\/a>\u00a0referred to as dark or virtual kitchens, are professional kitchen facilities set up to support delivery or carryout meals only, offering restaurant operators an opportunity to start an additional revenue\u00a0<\/span>stream<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d The ghos<\/span>t kitchen industry has experienced an increase in interest and revenue because\u00a0<\/span>it\u00a0<\/span>allow<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0restaurants to\u00a0<\/span>continue providing a great at home dining experience (through to-go or delivery) while maintaining social distancing requirements and capacity concerns.\u00a0<\/span>Ghost kitchens are especially useful for restaurants that are just starting up, or who want to get rid of their dining rooms but continue servicing their customers.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another\u00a0<\/span>concept that\u2019s being improved upon is\u00a0<\/span>mobile ordering. Following the lead of companies like Starbucks,\u00a0<\/span>more restaurants have begun to incorporate mobile ordering through customers<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0smart phones. Recently Taco Bell announced the launch<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>Taco Bell Go Mobile<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>designed specifically for diners to order ahead through the chain’s mobile app.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>This\u00a0<\/span>change to the traditional ordering method is intended to speed up the ordering process and reduce the number of people lingering in the restaurant waiting for\u00a0<\/span>their<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>orders<\/span> to be ready. Through mobile ordering, the process for customers should be easier and more efficient.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Both these concepts are unique ways to combat the main concerns we\u2019re seeing regarding restaurant dining<\/span>\u00a0\u2013<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0crowds.<\/span>\u00a0They also create more accessibility and\u00a0<\/span>limit close contact between employees and guests.\u00a0<\/span>But when considering these conceptual changes, especially\u00a0<\/span>ones that limit human interaction, it\u2019s crucial to\u00a0<\/span>find ways to maintain excellent customer service\u00a0<\/span>to continue driving consumers to your business.\u00a0<\/span>Here are a couple ways to\u00a0<\/span>prioritize great customer service amid<\/span>\u00a0these<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>changes<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
