Every week we comb through the news to find employment trends affecting the hospitality\u00a0<\/span>industry<\/span> so you don\u2019t have to. This week\u2019s topic: can you still work while on unemployment?<\/span><\/p>\n

When the U.S. was forced to quarantine due to the coronavirus, thousands of employees\u00a0<\/span>were\u00a0<\/span>either let go or placed on furlough until further notice. Because of this, unemployment claims grew from \u201c<\/span>6.2 million in February to 20.5 million in May 2020<\/span><\/a>\u201d \u2013 an\u00a0<\/span>increase of over 230%.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although states are in various phases of reopening, the\u00a0<\/span>regular emergence of\u00a0<\/span>new cases continue to force some to rely on unemployment<\/span>\u00a0benefits<\/span>. But, is it possible to work while on unemployment and still be eligible for it?<\/span><\/p>\n

Can you still work while on unemployment? <\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

First, i<\/span>t\u2019s important to\u00a0<\/span>know what exactly\u00a0<\/span>\u2018unemployment\u2019<\/span>\u00a0is: \u201c<\/span>Unemployment Insurance<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(UI) provides unemployment benefits, usually in the form of weekly payments, to eligible workers who become unemployed through no fault of their\u00a0<\/span>own and<\/span>\u00a0meet certain other eligibility requirements. UI is administered jointly by the U.S. Department of Labor and individual states.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In terms of working while still receiving unemployment, the short answer is yes<\/span>, you can still work while receiving unemployment benefits<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 but it\u2019s complicated.\u00a0<\/span>The first piece to understand is that unemployment\u00a0<\/span>benefits vary from state to state<\/span>, so when trying to understand what you\u2019re eligible to receive,\u00a0<\/span>check out the\u00a0<\/span>Unemployment Benefits Finder<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0<\/span>CareerStop<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are two options to work while on unemployment and still receive UI benefits. <\/span>One option is through a work-sharing program, which \u201chelps\u00a0<\/span>businesses<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to avoid laying off workers by letting them reduce worker hours instead. These workers receive a prorated unemployment benefit from the state to compensate for lost wages.<\/span>\u201d Unfortunately, work-sharing programs\u00a0<\/span>are only available in 26 states (click\u00a0<\/span>here<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to see a list<\/span>) and<\/span>\u00a0aren\u2019t well known by employees\/employers.\u00a0<\/span>If your state offers work<\/span>-sharing programs, contact your employer to find out how to get involved.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
