By now, you would have to be living under a rock\u00a0<\/span>to not know about the challenges the restaurant and hospitality industry has faced due to the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span>Despite the shutdowns\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0capacity restrictions, January was\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>best<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>performance<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for restaurants since the pandemic started early last year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That said, if you’re working at a restaurant this year, it\u2019s important to understand what <\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>best practices\u00a0<\/span>are\u00a0<\/span>so you can be safe and successful. Use these\u00a0do\u2019s\u00a0and don\u2019ts<\/span>\u00a0to help you while you\u2019re on a shift.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do:<\/strong> Help Educate and Inform<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Over the past year, there has been a lot of changes surrounding operating a restaurant during COVID-19. Because of rolling shutdowns, b<\/span>usinesses have had to close and then reopen (and then close…and\u00a0<\/span>then\u00a0<\/span>reopen) their doors\u00a0while also dealing with capacity restrictions and social distanc<\/span>ing requirements.\u00a0<\/span>For that reason, some guests may not be aware of or fully understand what the rules are.\u00a0<\/span>Make sure you s<\/span>tay\u00a0<\/span>up to date<\/span>\u00a0on your\u00a0<\/span>state’s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>oronavirus-related restaurant restrictions<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>that way you can help educate and inform guests while working at a restaurant during the pandemic. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t: Lose Your Patience<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Some guests may not understand the restrictions or remember exactly what they are. If you\u2019re g<\/span>etting questions or complaints (ex: \u201cwhy can\u2019t I sit\u00a0<\/span>there<\/span><\/i>?\u201d), calmly\u00a0explain your cities\u00a0restriction<\/span>s or escalate the issue to a manager. Don\u2019t lose patience \u2013\u2013 if you do, it will only frustrate everyone involved.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do: Carry\u00a0<\/span><\/b>PPE With You<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Your restaurant may have PPE (personal protective equipment) on hand, but it\u2019s better to have your own with you just in case. Keep a small bag wi<\/span>th a few masks, hand sanitizer, tissues, and any other items that will protect your health.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t: Forget to Follow the\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Mandated Mask Requirements<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Wearing your mask is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of the virus, and it\u2019s especially important\u00a0to wear it while you\u2019re working because of how many people you interact with.\u00a0<\/span>It may be tempting to take your mask off while chatting with\u00a0<\/span>friends\u00a0<\/span>or on your\u00a0<\/span>break but<\/span>\u00a0following the necessary requirements will set a good example for your\u00a0<\/span>coworkers and customers.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do: Pay Attention to Your Health<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The last thing you want to do is go into work if you\u2019re exhibiting signs of being sick.\u00a0<\/span>Be sure to listen to your body and communicate with your manager if you aren\u2019t feeling well \u2013 it\u2019s better to be safe than sorry.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It might be tempting to fake being sick so you can call out of work, but that can hurt the trust\u00a0<\/span>you and your manager have and paint you as an unreliable employee.
