For\u00a0<\/span>over<\/span>\u00a0a year<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>employees around the country\u00a0<\/span>were furloughed or permanently laid off due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus.\u00a0<\/span>The hospitality and foodservice industries were some of the most impacted businesses, with restaurants just beginning to loosen restrictions a few months ago.\u00a0<\/span>As we get further into Spring<\/span>,\u00a0most major cities\u00a0<\/span>will be looking to hire staff to\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>ccount for a\u00a0<\/span>surge in business\u00a0as<\/span>\u00a0the weather improves<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At this point, it’s unrealistic to think\u00a0<\/span>that hiring managers are unaware that people were laid off because of the pandemic. <\/span>Regardless, it\u2019s still important to make sure your post-pandemic resume is up to date. <\/span>But for job seekers who haven\u2019t worked for the better part of a year, what\u2019s the right way to update your post-pandemic resume for filling out <\/span>applications?<\/span>\u00a0We\u2019ll cover some\u00a0common\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>oncerns\u00a0<\/span>and the best\u00a0way to\u00a0<\/span>express\u00a0<\/span>them on your post-pandemic resume. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Concern<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u201c<\/span><\/i>I\u00a0<\/span><\/i>was laid off as soon as COVID-19 restrictions were put in place\u00a0<\/span><\/i>and haven\u2019t worked in over a year.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Employers will be looking for transparency, but there probably isn\u2019t a need to go into too much detail about being furloughed if it was because of the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span>Clearly lay out past employment dates and in lieu of including job experience for the past year, highlight your soft skills\u00a0and what strengths you can bring to the table.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Concern<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u201cI haven\u2019t worked since the beginning of the pandemic but\u00a0<\/span><\/i>want to find a new job in a different industry.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Some hospitality professionals may be looking to change industries\u00a0<\/span>after the impact of the pandemic<\/span>\u00a0but aren\u2019t sure how to design their resume. Consider placing special importance on\u00a0<\/span>any\u00a0<\/span>transferrable\u00a0<\/span>skills\u00a0<\/span>you have that are relevant to the job you’re applying to. For example, if\u00a0<\/span>you worked as a bartender, you\u00a0<\/span>could<\/span>\u00a0bring attention to your multi-tasking and organizational\u00a0<\/span>skills rather than your expertise in crafting cocktails.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Concern<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u201cI<\/span><\/i>\u2019ve worked\u00a0<\/span><\/i>here and there during the pandemic but nothing long-term. I\u2019m ready to get back into the workforce.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

W<\/span>ork you did during the pandemic<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is significant,\u00a0<\/span>especially if it\u2019s relevant to the job you\u2019re applying for. But if it\u00a0<\/span>wasn\u2019t steady work, it may be hard to\u00a0<\/span>describe\u00a0what you accomplished. Rather than\u00a0<\/span>listing each individual day you worked, consider using a\u00a0<\/span>functional resume template<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>A functional resume focuses on\u00a0<\/span>listing\u00a0<\/span>professional skills\u00a0<\/span>as\u00a0<\/span>opposed to\u00a0<\/span>each job you\u2019ve held \u2013\u2013 this will\u00a0<\/span>better feature your accomplishments when creating your post-pandemic resume. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Concern<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u201cI\u00a0<\/span><\/i>took some courses and got some certifications during quarantine. Should those go on my res<\/span><\/i>ume?\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

The answer is\u00a0<\/span>yes<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0if it\u2019s relevant in some way to the job you\u2019re interested in.\u00a0<\/span>This will help further support your credentials and show your investment in self-improvement.\u00a0<\/span>Add certifications and courses into your skills section or create something specific to house your\u00a0<\/span>achievements<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After a year of uncertainty around the pandemic, things are finally starting to look up with\u00a0<\/span>25%<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of the U.S. population being fully vaccinated.\u00a0<\/span>Though it can feel stressful to reenter the workforce, taking small steps will help you be more prepared once you find the right job.\u00a0<\/span>Give your post-pandemic resume a revamp that way it\u2019s ready for the current employment landscape. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
