Both\u00a0industries prioritize creating a great experience\u00a0that\u00a0fosters return customers. Additionally, retail and hospitality employees both require a similar set of skills such as\u00a0good communication, reliability, and the ability to work a sometimes-strenuous job.\u00a0Not to mention\u00a0the\u00a0fact\u00a0that\u00a0both sectors were faced with similar challenges during the pandemic.\u00a0But\u00a0even though\u00a0they provide a service, retail stores aren\u2019t technically considered part of the hospitality industry\u00a0despite their similarities.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Besides being more similar than we\u00a0think,\u00a0retail businesses can learn\u00a0a few things\u00a0from\u00a0hospitality businesses\u00a0(and vice versa).\u00a0By referencing\u00a0some of the standards put in place in\u00a0hospitality,\u00a0retail stores\u00a0may be able to improve on their own operations.\u00a0Below we\u2019ll list\u00a0how retail can learn from\u00a0the hospitality industry to create a better experience for customers.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">What Retail Can Learn from Hospitality<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Retail stores\u00a0include a wide array of businesses ranging from small boutiques to big brand names like Target. Though originally thought of as brick-and-mortar establishments, the online shopping\u00a0boom\u00a0taken\u00a0place over the last several years has encouraged more businesses to sell their products on\u00a0the internet.\u00a0According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/nrf.com\/topics\/economy\/state-retail\">over<\/a> one million retail stores across the country. Retail can learn from hospitality, but what exactly can they learn?<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Create a more personalized feeling<\/span><\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Besides providing a service, the main purpose of any bar, restaurant, or hotel is to create a great guest experience that leaves customers wanting more. Whether it be more of the product or more of the feeling they have when they visit. Traditionally retail stores prioritize efficiency and the ability to get customers in and out \u2013 especially at the big-name retailers. But connecting with consumers is an impactful way to help make sure they return to your business or at least share their positive experience with friends.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Though we understand the importance of budgeting (especially during a pandemic), consider implementing more employees to work on the floor. This team can help greet customers, ask or answer any questions, or just lend a smile and wave when someone needs it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Quality over quantity<\/span><\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">It\u2019s possible\u00a0someone may\u00a0continue to\u00a0shop at your business despite not having a very positive experience.\u00a0Regardless of the reason, this consumer might be sharing their poor experience with potential customers,\u00a0limiting new business.\u00a0That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to prioritize quality over quantity. It&#8217;s not good enough to just have customers return \u2013 they need to have a positive experience as well. Think about one of your favorite restaurants, bars, or coffee shops. What do they do\u00a0that\u00a0makes your time\u00a0there\u00a0so\u00a0special?\u00a0Do they remember your name or favorite drink? Consider what qualities they have and implement it within your own team.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Upselling and recommendations<\/span><\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Part of the responsibility of hospitality and food service staff is to upsell menu items and\u00a0provide\u00a0their own recommendations to guests. By suggesting\u00a0menu items\u00a0that\u00a0are more expensive or have unique add-ons (think adding a lobster tail to a steak), employees\u00a0can help bring in more revenue\u00a0for the business. Plus, it helps grow\u00a0that\u00a0connection between the employee and the customer.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">At some retail stores,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0customary\u00a0(and sometimes necessary)\u00a0to\u00a0provide\u00a0recommendations.\u00a0But it\u2019s not as likely to see an employee recommending the\u00a0customer\u00a0purchase a better brand of vacuum cleaner. While we\u2019re not suggesting\u00a0you\u00a0need to station employees all over the store to share their\u00a0opinions\u00a0on products, it\u2019s a good idea to find a middle ground where employees can share their true and honest\u00a0feedback in a way\u00a0that\u00a0connects with customers.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The idea of the hospitality and retail industries working together isn\u2019t new. Think about places like bookstores that have coffee shops or gyms with caf\u00e9s.
