The Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, well-balanced meals in accordance with prescribed dietary requirements and food safety standards. This role supports the overall health and recovery of patients by ensuring meals are served in a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment. The Cook must maintain a professional and compassionate demeanor while working in a behavioral health setting, where patients may have mental health, substance use, or co-occurring disorders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Prepare meals according to established menus, recipes, and dietary requirements including special diets (e.g., low sodium, diabetic, vegetarian).
• Follow food safety and sanitation procedures in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of kitchen and food storage areas.
• Accurately record food temperatures and complete daily food service logs.
• Assist with receiving, inspecting, and storing food and supplies.
• Monitor food inventory and report shortages or concerns to the Food Service Manager.
• Communicate effectively with dietary staff, nursing staff, and other departments to ensure patient needs are met.
• Interact appropriately and respectfully with patients when serving meals or working in patient areas.
• Adhere to HIPAA and confidentiality standards.
• Participate in regular in-service training and staff meetings.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of 1 year of cooking experience in healthcare, institutional, or high-volume food service preferred.
• Experience working in behavioral health or with vulnerable populations is a plus.

Certifications:

• Food Handler’s Permit or ServSafe Certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
