2020 has been a year that’s forced many of us to reflect and reevaluate what’s important to us –– and LGC was no exception. In June, some of our team sat down to talk about our company’s shared goals and hopes for the future. The result? Crafting a mission and vision statement that better reflects our company.
What is a mission and vision statement?
First, it’s important to identify what a mission statement and vision statement are. They can be defined by the following: “A vision statement focuses on tomorrow and what an organization wants to ultimately become. A mission statement focuses on today and what an organization does to achieve it. Both are vital in directing goals.”
There are a couple reasons why someone would create or update a mission and vision statement; for example, your organization doesn’t have one already, your company has changed directions recently, or you’re reprioritizing the focus of your operations. Whatever the reason is, implementing a strong mission and vision statement is important for effectively communicating with your desired audience.
Our roadmap to success
When the “Mission Statement Taskforce” at LGC was established, we took a detailed approach to crafting the statements that would eventually represent our company. The taskforce, formed by CEO George Lessmeister, was comprised of diverse individuals who all brought a unique background to LGC. After first evaluating the current mission statement, we did research on statements we liked, and eventually landed on the idea to also build a vision statement to highlight what we see for the future.
Once each taskforce member wrote a first draft, we began sharing feedback and analyzing what we put together. One huge aspect of our process was to include feedback from other team members, so one week the taskforce consulted with colleagues on what they wanted in a mission and vision statement and what was important to them. After rounds of review and providing feedback, the taskforce chose a couple options to present to LGC’s executive team. From there, a winner was chosen.
Tips for crafting your own statements
After we finalized our statements, we were able to identify some tips for others who are going through the process of creating their mission and vision statement. These include:
- Consider who your target audience is. Does your statement need to be more inclusive, or exclusive?
- Get input from various team members. These statements should encompass your company’s ‘why’ (mission) and ‘how’ (vision), which could look different from person to person. The more input you gather, the more ideas you’ll have.
- Check out some examples. If it’s your first time creating a mission statement or you need some inspiration, look at examples from other businesses. This may help give you an idea on formatting, length, etc.
- Take some time away. After you’ve written your statement (at least the first draft), take some time away from it before you re-visit – you’ll get a fresh look at what you’ve written and may feel differently about it now.
An accurate mission and vision statement is a great way to convey the right message to your audience, whoever they are. By following the above tips, you’ll be able to create communication that accurately demonstrates the goals and plans of your company.
