May the 4th be with you! Happy Star Wars Day!

Happy Star Wars Day to those who celebrate! Whether you’ve been a fan of the series for 40 years or 2 years, everyone can learn something from the franchise, no matter your age. Avoid the Dark Side of the workforce with these 8 lessons we can learn from the movies!

  • Friendship comes in many forms: The one theme you can always find in a Star Wars movie is a trio of friendship. Han, Luke, and Leia; Rey, Poe, and Finn; Anakin, Padmé, and Obi-Wan. But you can also find friendships between characters who you wouldn’t expect: Han and Chewie; C-3PO and R2-D2; Rey and BB-8, and the list goes on. Don’t underestimate who your friends can be and what you can learn from each other. Whether it’s a coworker, boss, or customer you never know who you’ll encounter and how they’ll impact you. Keep an open-mind and avoid judgment.
  • It’s never too late to change: Just like Darth Vader eventually helped take down the Emperor, it’s never too late to make the right choice. Similar to the phrase “better late than never,” changing your mind isn’t a bad thing. Whether it’s about a project idea, a schedule arrangement, or which job offer to accept, it’s better to have taken steps towards positive change than to have never done it at all.
  • Your legacy isn’t as powerful as what you do with it: Whether you carry the Skywalker name or not, it doesn’t mean anything unless you do something that makes it meaningful. We see this all the time with important names in popular culture. They’re household names, but a name doesn’t earn you respect, what you do earns you respect. Don’t confuse being known for being credible.
  • A good leader thinks of everyone not just the mission: Poe Dameron is a great example of someone who gets laser focused on the task and doesn’t think about the bigger picture. Though it’s one of his character flaws, that doesn’t mean he’s a bad leader, he just needed to slow down and zoom out. The best leaders know their people. They know their strengths and how to put them in positions that they will excel in. Don’t get too caught up in the task at hand that you forget the people who are following your lead.
  • A positive attitude can go a long way: “Rebellions are built on hope.” Throughout the entire series, hope is a common theme. The intergalactic Empire is threatening to take over? The Jedi are the hope. The rebels feel like no one cares about the survival of the galaxy? Don’t worry, have hope, believe in people. There’s 2 things you can always control: your attitude and your effort. Having a positive attitude and believing in the good helps you set and reach goals. It also helps center yourself when everything feels a bit too overwhelming. If you’re lacking creativity and motivation, take a break and switch tasks. If you’re stressed with the amount of customers you’re dealing with, take a breath and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
  • Do or do not, there is no try: When it comes to achieving what you want to, you cannot simply try.  You must do in order to see results. That doesn’t mean that efforts shouldn’t be recognized, but in order to see real action, you have to do more than just trying.  You want to see a change in your organization? You can’t just think about it or write it down, you have to take steps towards what you want. Create a plan, talk to your boss, keep doing until you see the results you want.
  • You cannot learn unless you fail: There’s a terrible connotation associated with the word “failure.” When the Jedi learn how to connect to the Force, they don’t get it right the first time. In fact, they probably don’t get it right until at least their thousandth try.  Most start training as younglings and move their way up to becoming Padawans and then Masters. They don’t just wake up and get appointed to the Jedi Counsel. They have to fail in order to learn how to do things correctly. So, the next time you don’t do something right, learn from it, don’t dwell on it.
  • There is no good or evil, you are defined by your choices:  Both Darth Vader and Kylo Ren played hopscotch with the line between good and evil. They were marked for evil but their actions and thoughts would tend to lean more towards protecting people they love. Similarly, as Sirius Black from Harry Potter famously said, “the world isn’t split into good and bad, there is both light and dark in all of us. It’s what you choose to act on that makes you who you really are.” Just as your name doesn’t carry respect, actions speak louder than words.
