LGC Stories | Meet Shawnda Trout, Corporate Controller

For the past 9 years, Shawnda has played an integral part in monitoring and advancing the financial health of LGC. Without further ado let’s dive into her story!

For the past nine years, Shawnda Trout has been a vital force in advancing LGC’s financial health. As Corporate Controller, her journey stands out among our Executive VPs since she leads the financial department rather than a staffing division. Let’s dive into her inspiring story!

Shawnda grew up in the small town of Winchester, Indiana, where she spent her early years helping in her family’s furniture store, learning the fundamentals of running a small business. Her interest in business naturally led her to the University of Evansville, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Accounting.

After graduation, Shawnda jumped headfirst into the corporate world, starting at one of the largest accounting firms, Ernst & Young. Her career began in auditing, and she furthered her education by earning a Master’s in Accountancy from Notre Dame.

Following her graduate studies, Shawnda transitioned to an internal audit position with ADESA, traveling across the country to audit the internal operations of different auction branches. Later, she moved into corporate finance at Stanley, Black & Decker, where she held various positions in sales reporting, data analysis, and business intelligence, which helped her develop a well-rounded skill set.

In 2015, Shawnda decided to return to public accounting, focusing on helping mid-size and smaller firms with their financial and accounting needs. This decision eventually brought her to LGC, where she began as a one-woman accounting department. Over time, her role expanded, and she was appointed to the Executive Team.

Reflecting on her role at LGC, Shawnda says, “I truly feel I have the ability to do so many different things that help propel the company forward—by monitoring our financial health, sharing stats and trends, and looking toward the future.”

While Shawnda didn’t begin her career with LGC, she appreciates how her previous experiences prepared her for success here. “I believe the wide range of skills and experiences I gained before joining LGC set me up to thrive in this role,” she explains.

Of course, starting at LGC came with its own set of challenges. Shawnda recalls learning new processes such as payroll, accounts receivable management, and bill payments. As the company has grown and streamlined operations, her department has expanded into a dedicated team of four.

During times when she faced uncharted territory, Shawnda’s determination and curiosity drove her to succeed. “I’ve learned not to be afraid to go after what you want. Keep asking questions and always seek opportunities to learn something new,” she advises. Shawnda emphasizes the importance of collaboration at LGC, where she’s found everyone, especially within the Executive Team, is eager to help others succeed.

Reflecting on her career growth, Shawnda credits her earlier roles for laying a strong foundation, but she’s also quick to highlight the knowledge she’s gained from LGC’s leadership. “I’ve learned a lot from both George and Glen about the staffing industry and the unique challenges of running a small to midsize company,” she says.

Outside of work, Shawnda enjoys spending time with her family, cheering on her three children in their various activities—from high school track meets to baseball games and dance recitals. When she’s not with family, she loves traveling, hanging out with friends, and spending time outdoors biking or camping.

At LGC, we’re continually inspired by the leaders who shape our company and nurture our teams. Shawnda has played an integral role in helping LGC grow into the strong and vibrant business we are today. Let Shawnda’s passion and determination inspire you to grow within your role—or, if you’re ready, join our team and start your journey with LGC!
