While the coronavirus has continued to shut down major cities across the U.S., some Fourth of July festivities will still be held this weekend celebrating America’s 244th birthday. If you’re working this holiday weekend (as many employees are), here are a few things to keep in mind to ensure a safe and successful shift.
Tips for Working This Holiday Weekend
Stay cool
July tends to be the warmest month of the year, with July 2019 documented as the hottest month on record ever. With parties, BBQ’s, and firework events being the most popular gatherings this weekend – not to mention that many restaurants and bars are only allowing patio seating – it’s safe to say that a lot of employees will be working outside. It’s extremely important to take measures to avoid heat stroke, “a condition caused by your body overheating, usually as a result of prolonged exposure to or physical exertion in high temperatures.” Some symptoms to watch for include high body temp, flushed skin, nausea/vomiting, headache, and a racing heart rate. Here are some ways to prevent heat stroke (via the Mayo Clinic):
- Wear loose- fitting, lightweight clothing
- Protect against sunburn
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Never leave anyone in a parked car
- Take it easy during the hottest parts of the day
- If you can’t avoid strenuous activity in hot weather, drink fluids and rest frequently in a cool spot
- Be cautious if you’re at increased risk
Stay focused
With the heat and the excitement of the holiday, it can be difficult to stay focused on the job. We know you’re eager to join in on the fun, but while you’re working, it’s important for your safety and the safety of the guests that you remain aware of the task at hand, as well as stay productive. Check out five ways to refocus your energy in case you need a little pick-me-up.
Stay prepared
The Fourth of July is one of the busiest traveling holidays as people are going to visit friends and family for the day or weekend. This could lead to congested roadways, as well as a (possibly) limited public transportation schedule. Be sure to plan out your commute, giving yourself extra time to get to work. If you’re traveling at night, be cautious of fireworks or debris in the road.
Amidst the fun this weekend, if you’re working, remember to prioritize the safety of yourself and the people around you in order to have a successful shift. Once you’re off work, feel free to join in on the festivities and enjoy the weekend.
