Every week we comb through the news to find employment trends affecting the hospitality industry so you don’t have to. This week’s topic: four reasons to hire entry level workers with little-to-no experience in hospitality.
4 Reasons to Hire Entry Level Workers
Restaurants and hotels have been getting creative when it comes to hiring. Some offer incentives or partner with staffing agencies. Another option is to hire entry level workers who aren’t experienced in hospitality.
Understandably, there are some concerns regarding your decision to hire entry level workers with little experience. But through training and guidance, you’ll have a knowledgeable worker in no time. At LGC, we see success in our server training program, that teaches new hires the basics of serving to prepare them for work. Here are a few reasons to hire entry level workers with no previous hospitality experience:
- They may have great soft skills. Soft skills are defined as “personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people.” Often, it’s not something you can teach. If you meet a candidate that has great people and communication skills (vital in this industry) but a lack of technical skills, they would still make a great addition to the team with a little training.
- It widens the talent pool. Of course, the ideal candidate has a plethora of experience and stellar soft skills, but those parameters significantly narrow the talent pool. By opening your requirements, it will drastically widen the amount of people who are eligible for your job – and would have a huge impact during this hiring climate.
- Workers will stay onboard longer. Training less experienced workers can lead to longer employee retention and satisfaction due to the value of learning new skills.
- Employees will have a fresh perspective. Hiring someone who has no experience means they’re a blank slate; you can teach them the specifics of your restaurant or hotel without worrying about habits from a past job.
