Every week we comb through the news to find employment trends affecting the hospitality industry so you donโ€™t have to. This weekโ€™s topic: tips to maintain restaurant cleanliness.

According to a recent survey by Restaurant Dive, โ€œ75% of consumers will skip a restaurant with negative reviews about its cleanliness.โ€ Not only that, but 1 in every 4 customers believe restaurants could improve on how clean their location is. These statistics show that even though the dining and hospitality industries make billions of dollars per year, thereโ€™s still room for improvement to keep guests coming back for more.

Thankfully, improving on restaurant cleanliness is something the entire team can get involved in, from front-of-house to back-of-house. And while it can involve hard work and a little elbow grease, the results can lead to higher guest satisfaction and safety. Here are some simple, yet effective tips to maintain restaurant cleanliness:

4 Quick Tips to Maintain Restaurant Cleanliness
  • Encourage the 5 foot rule. This โ€˜ruleโ€™ states that an employee must pick up any piece of trash no matter how small if itโ€™s within 5 feet of them. This will help prevent garbage from piling up if there isnโ€™t a team member who is regularly sweeping.
  • Change gloves frequentlyWearing clean gloves reduces the chance of smudging glasses or plates before theyโ€™re served to guests.
  • Take the time. If you work in a family friendly restaurant, chances are youโ€™ve experienced a messy toddler. Before reseating with new guests, take the time to clean under the table to get any debris left behind by the messy eater.
  • Schedule deep cleans. While it might not be everyoneโ€™s favorite task, a deep clean of the dining area, kitchen, or bar is a great way to clean spots that may not always get attention during a regular cleaning.

One of the most important aspects of a restaurant is that itโ€™s a clean environment for employees and guests. While cleaning is a part of everyday duties, there are ways to go above and beyond to maintain restaurant cleanliness and ensure itโ€™s pristine and safe for guests to keep them coming back for more.
